those. But for this week, we are on a cold case.
00:01:13.109 --> 00:01:17.109
Yes, we are on episode 137, and we are covering
00:01:17.109 --> 00:01:21.390
a cold case, the cold case of Shana Jaros. All
00:01:21.390 --> 00:01:24.969
right, let's get into it. Today, we are talking
00:01:24.969 --> 00:01:27.810
about the cold case of Shana Jaros, and this
00:01:27.810 --> 00:01:31.790
takes place in November of 1995 in Nokomis, Illinois.
00:01:32.430 --> 00:01:36.909
But first, a little bit about Shana. Shana Jaros
00:01:36.909 --> 00:01:41.230
is just 18 years old in 1995. That spring, she
00:01:41.230 --> 00:01:43.569
had graduated from high school, and she was stepping
00:01:43.569 --> 00:01:46.689
into adulthood and independence. She had just
00:01:46.689 --> 00:01:49.939
moved into her first apartment. a small building
00:01:49.939 --> 00:01:52.819
with six units on South Maple Street in Nokomis,
00:01:52.879 --> 00:01:55.579
Illinois. She shared the space with a roommate,
00:01:55.819 --> 00:01:59.719
Tanya, who was close to her in age. Nokomis,
00:01:59.780 --> 00:02:02.599
Illinois is a quiet, close -knit community in
00:02:02.599 --> 00:02:06.060
central Illinois. The population is around 2
00:02:06.060 --> 00:02:11.240
,700 people. Shana worked at Golden Manor Nursing
00:02:11.240 --> 00:02:14.539
Home, a job she had held since she was 16 years
00:02:14.539 --> 00:02:18.379
old. She was a certified nurse's aide. and she
00:02:18.379 --> 00:02:20.520
was known for her ability to connect with people,
00:02:20.740 --> 00:02:25.340
especially the elderly. She had a goal of becoming
00:02:25.340 --> 00:02:27.400
a nurse one day, and she wanted to either work
00:02:27.400 --> 00:02:29.900
with children or the elderly because she enjoyed
00:02:29.900 --> 00:02:33.879
both of them so much. Friends described Shana
00:02:33.879 --> 00:02:35.759
as someone who could get along with anybody,
00:02:36.099 --> 00:02:40.439
kind -hearted, loving. She loved the Miami Dolphins,
00:02:40.580 --> 00:02:44.240
music, and spending time with her family. Shana
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:47.419
was the oldest of four siblings. She was also
00:02:47.419 --> 00:02:49.860
six foot tall by the time she had graduated high
00:02:49.860 --> 00:02:52.919
school. Her height made her an easy target for
00:02:52.919 --> 00:02:56.819
bullying. But despite this, Shana remained kind
00:02:56.819 --> 00:03:00.740
-hearted. After graduation, she began hanging
00:03:00.740 --> 00:03:03.099
out with a new crowd of friends, people who readily
00:03:03.099 --> 00:03:06.319
accepted her. Her younger sister was a little
00:03:06.319 --> 00:03:08.599
weary of them. She thought they might be a bad
00:03:08.599 --> 00:03:12.180
influence. Shana had a new boyfriend, according
00:03:12.180 --> 00:03:15.639
to reports. And she had just moved into her new
00:03:15.639 --> 00:03:20.099
apartment. She was starting her life. And now,
00:03:20.180 --> 00:03:25.219
a timeline of events. Tuesday, October 31st,
00:03:25.219 --> 00:03:30.139
1995. On Halloween, Shana spent the evening trick
00:03:30.139 --> 00:03:32.740
-or -treating with her friend Kim and Kim's daughter.
00:03:33.379 --> 00:03:35.960
Kim lived across the street and also worked with
00:03:35.960 --> 00:03:38.460
Shana at the nursing home. They were really close.
00:03:39.629 --> 00:03:41.949
Shana's younger brother came to visit and join
00:03:41.949 --> 00:03:45.090
in on the trick -or -treating. When their father,
00:03:45.150 --> 00:03:47.669
Dwayne, picked him up later that night, he remembered
00:03:47.669 --> 00:03:50.110
Shana wearing a blue housecoat as she walked
00:03:50.110 --> 00:03:53.969
her brother out. That evening on Halloween, Shana
00:03:53.969 --> 00:03:57.050
hosted a small housewarming and Halloween party.
00:03:57.969 --> 00:04:00.629
It wasn't a big gathering, just four people.
00:04:01.330 --> 00:04:05.050
Shana, her roommate, Tanya Gilmore, Tanya's boyfriend,
00:04:05.289 --> 00:04:08.009
Jason Carver, and the next -door neighbor, Billy
00:04:08.009 --> 00:04:11.330
Malloy. They spent the night playing cards, laughing,
00:04:11.509 --> 00:04:14.389
and celebrating until around midnight, according
00:04:14.389 --> 00:04:18.149
to her friends. The next day, Wednesday, November
00:04:18.149 --> 00:04:23.730
1st, 1995, at around 6 .50 a .m., Shana's landlord
00:04:23.730 --> 00:04:26.610
was leaving her apartment and she noticed that
00:04:26.610 --> 00:04:30.149
Shana's apartment door was left ajar. She thought
00:04:30.149 --> 00:04:32.730
it was weird, so she called out, but nobody answered.
00:04:33.209 --> 00:04:36.170
Her landlord decided to go inside and make sure
00:04:36.170 --> 00:04:39.360
everything was okay. When she entered the apartment,
00:04:39.720 --> 00:04:43.420
she made the horrific discovery. She found Shana
00:04:43.420 --> 00:04:47.379
dead. She immediately backed up and called police.
00:04:48.800 --> 00:04:51.720
Authorities arrived quickly. It was the first
00:04:51.720 --> 00:04:54.620
murder the local department had seen in 25 years.
00:04:55.519 --> 00:05:00.060
Police quickly start processing the scene. Lots
00:05:00.060 --> 00:05:02.720
of evidence is taken from the house, and finally,
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:05.699
Shana's body is removed around 1 in the afternoon
00:05:05.699 --> 00:05:09.060
and sent for an autopsy. Investigators noted
00:05:09.060 --> 00:05:11.420
that there was no sign of forced entry at the
00:05:11.420 --> 00:05:13.819
apartment, leading them to believe that Shana
00:05:13.819 --> 00:05:16.860
likely knew her killer. Police also interviewed
00:05:16.860 --> 00:05:20.180
neighbors at this time. One neighbor told police
00:05:20.180 --> 00:05:22.899
that they heard a scuffle coming from Shana's
00:05:22.899 --> 00:05:26.699
apartment around 4 .46 a .m., but they didn't
00:05:26.699 --> 00:05:28.939
see anyone leaving the apartment after this.
00:05:29.899 --> 00:05:33.339
By evening, Sheriff Jim Vassie told the press
00:05:33.339 --> 00:05:35.660
that there were no suspects at this time and
00:05:35.660 --> 00:05:37.980
they were still busy interviewing those who were
00:05:37.980 --> 00:05:42.220
close to Shana. On Thursday, November 2, 1995,
00:05:42.899 --> 00:05:46.959
Shana's autopsy is done. It confirms that Shana
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:50.000
had been stabbed multiple times, but police don't
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:52.180
release any more details about that at this time.
00:05:52.620 --> 00:05:55.720
They do say, however, that Shana died from massive
00:05:55.720 --> 00:05:58.879
blood loss. They also say that she was primarily
00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:03.139
stabbed in her upper chest and neck area. It
00:06:03.139 --> 00:06:04.980
is believed that she died in the early morning
00:06:04.980 --> 00:06:07.879
hours of November 1st, but they aren't specific
00:06:07.879 --> 00:06:10.939
about the time. Based off of family comments,
00:06:11.120 --> 00:06:13.439
I do believe that the time is somewhere between
00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:18.420
4, 5 in the morning. We know that toxicology
00:06:18.420 --> 00:06:20.740
reports are done and it takes weeks for them
00:06:20.740 --> 00:06:23.439
to come back, but police never release the results
00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:27.509
of those toxicology reports. Shana's family and
00:06:27.509 --> 00:06:30.569
the small town of Nokomis were shattered by this
00:06:30.569 --> 00:06:33.649
murder. Like I mentioned earlier, Shana's was
00:06:33.649 --> 00:06:36.610
the first murder in 25 years for this community,
00:06:36.810 --> 00:06:40.629
so everyone was shocked by it. Her cousin later
00:06:40.629 --> 00:06:57.970
said, quote, On Saturday, November 4th, 1995,
00:06:58.389 --> 00:07:01.930
only three days after her murder, Shana's late
00:07:01.930 --> 00:07:04.050
to rest just blocks away from her apartment.
00:07:05.329 --> 00:07:08.290
Police still haven't identified a suspect or
00:07:08.290 --> 00:07:12.009
located the murder weapon. But a week after the
00:07:12.009 --> 00:07:14.750
murder, police say that they don't have any leads.
00:07:15.769 --> 00:07:20.509
As winter sets in, Shana's case gets cold. In
00:07:20.509 --> 00:07:23.730
January of 1996, two months after the murder,
00:07:24.170 --> 00:07:27.069
An inquest into Shana's death was held in Hillsboro.
00:07:27.290 --> 00:07:29.970
It confirmed what the autopsy had already told
00:07:29.970 --> 00:07:33.509
us, that she died from massive blood loss due
00:07:33.509 --> 00:07:36.089
to multiple stab wounds in her neck and chest
00:07:36.089 --> 00:07:41.230
area. In June of 1996, so this is seven months
00:07:41.230 --> 00:07:45.110
after the murder, there were no arrests and little
00:07:45.110 --> 00:07:48.410
progress that was made public. Shana's family
00:07:48.410 --> 00:07:51.449
held a candlelight vigil to honor her and to
00:07:51.449 --> 00:07:53.750
bring awareness to her case and other victims
00:07:53.750 --> 00:07:57.490
of violent crime. Frustration grew in the community
00:07:57.490 --> 00:08:01.490
as the case appeared to stall. In October of
00:08:01.490 --> 00:08:05.209
1996, as we approach the one -year anniversary
00:08:05.209 --> 00:08:08.629
of Shana's murder, yellow ribbons still appeared
00:08:08.629 --> 00:08:11.399
all throughout Nokomis. They had been hung up
00:08:11.399 --> 00:08:13.680
shortly after she was murdered to bring awareness
00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:17.160
to her case, and many businesses, houses, had
00:08:17.160 --> 00:08:20.259
just left them up. Shana's father, Duane, said,
00:08:20.339 --> 00:08:30.120
Police say that they are still actively working
00:08:30.120 --> 00:08:33.299
on the case a year later. They say that they
00:08:33.299 --> 00:08:35.879
are waiting on evidence and DNA results from
00:08:35.879 --> 00:08:39.090
the FBI. Results that they had been waiting for,
00:08:39.149 --> 00:08:43.090
for at least six months, they say. Master Sergeant
00:08:43.090 --> 00:08:46.210
Fred Danini told reporters that investigators
00:08:46.210 --> 00:08:49.269
had potential suspects, but were waiting for
00:08:49.269 --> 00:08:53.490
forensic results to narrow their focus. They
00:08:53.490 --> 00:08:56.029
don't name any of the suspects publicly at this
00:08:56.029 --> 00:09:00.049
point. As the months continue to tick by, police
00:09:00.049 --> 00:09:03.730
never do any update about what those FBI results...
00:09:04.090 --> 00:09:07.509
or if they were able to get DNA. They never say
00:09:07.509 --> 00:09:11.929
what those results were. In November of 1998,
00:09:12.669 --> 00:09:15.669
three years after the murder, there are still
00:09:15.669 --> 00:09:18.230
no arrests and still no suspects in the case.
00:09:19.070 --> 00:09:22.590
A $3 ,000 reward was offered for information.
00:09:23.690 --> 00:09:27.370
It is revealed at this time that Shana had been
00:09:27.370 --> 00:09:31.379
stabbed 54 times during the attack. a detail
00:09:31.379 --> 00:09:33.919
that underscored the brutality of the crime.
00:09:35.120 --> 00:09:38.659
By this point, three years later, police had
00:09:38.659 --> 00:09:41.539
conducted over 300 interviews and collected nearly
00:09:41.539 --> 00:09:45.720
200 pieces of evidence. They still believed that
00:09:45.720 --> 00:09:50.059
Shana knew her killer. However, years start to
00:09:50.059 --> 00:09:53.059
pass. Shana's case does come up in the media
00:09:53.059 --> 00:09:55.639
around the anniversary, and her family does an
00:09:55.639 --> 00:09:58.840
incredible job of keeping her face alive. As
00:09:58.840 --> 00:10:01.120
social media starts to become a thing, they get
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:03.779
on there and create memorial pages for her to
00:10:03.779 --> 00:10:06.000
keep her case active in the community and to
00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:10.360
update people on what's happening. In 2024, 29
00:10:10.360 --> 00:10:13.620
years after the murder, Shana's case remains
00:10:13.620 --> 00:10:17.200
unsolved. Many of her friends from that time,
00:10:17.220 --> 00:10:19.100
specifically those that she was hanging out with
00:10:19.100 --> 00:10:22.379
the summer before she was murdered, have died.
00:10:24.230 --> 00:10:26.870
Authorities say the investigation is still active,
00:10:27.029 --> 00:10:29.470
but they have not released any new information
00:10:29.470 --> 00:10:32.409
and they refuse to answer any questions citing
00:10:32.409 --> 00:10:36.090
the ongoing investigation. But that is really
00:10:36.090 --> 00:10:38.950
all we know about the murder of Shana Jaros.
00:10:39.929 --> 00:10:42.610
So if you know anything about the murder of Shana
00:10:42.610 --> 00:10:45.450
Jaros, you are urged to contact the Illinois
00:10:45.450 --> 00:10:50.330
State Police Zone 6 Investigations at 618 -346
00:10:50.330 --> 00:11:05.240
- So that is the cold case of Shana Jaros. I'm
00:11:05.240 --> 00:11:07.779
not sure if you felt this way while you were
00:11:07.779 --> 00:11:11.500
doing your investigative research into Shana's
00:11:11.500 --> 00:11:17.139
case, but I definitely felt like her story was
00:11:17.139 --> 00:11:20.980
just a bit familiar, more in the sense of, She
00:11:20.980 --> 00:11:24.519
left home at 18 and was making her way in her
00:11:24.519 --> 00:11:27.659
new young adult life. I know you and I did the
00:11:27.659 --> 00:11:32.519
same. And there were a lot of nights that I experienced
00:11:32.519 --> 00:11:36.519
in my youth that was very similar to this one.
00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:41.600
And I mean, you know, playing cards and hanging
00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:44.899
out, living in your new and or first apartment,
00:11:45.299 --> 00:11:48.019
hanging with your friends. It sounded very familiar
00:11:48.019 --> 00:11:52.149
to me. Totally. I remember being, you know, 18,
00:11:52.250 --> 00:11:55.889
19, 20 and just needing to like be with my friends
00:11:55.889 --> 00:11:58.710
every weekend and specifically like playing cards.
00:11:58.789 --> 00:12:01.450
That is something that like I feel like a lot
00:12:01.450 --> 00:12:03.970
of people kind of get into like at 18, 19 years
00:12:03.970 --> 00:12:05.629
old, like you just want to play cards with your
00:12:05.629 --> 00:12:09.110
friends. So I definitely have memories of doing
00:12:09.110 --> 00:12:13.740
that. Yeah, every time my friends moved into
00:12:13.740 --> 00:12:16.399
a new place, like a new apartment, we would always
00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:18.740
have some kind of like housewarming celebration.
00:12:19.580 --> 00:12:21.659
And they could range from really big parties
00:12:21.659 --> 00:12:24.059
to, you know, just kind of an intimate gathering
00:12:24.059 --> 00:12:28.440
like Shana was having for her housewarming slash
00:12:28.440 --> 00:12:31.120
Halloween party. But yeah, the whole scene felt
00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:34.799
very familiar to me and very normal. I will say
00:12:34.799 --> 00:12:41.169
too, around the same age as Shana, Along with
00:12:41.169 --> 00:12:44.350
my roommates experienced a robbery. And I think
00:12:44.350 --> 00:12:47.250
I've mentioned that on this podcast before. But
00:12:47.250 --> 00:12:51.110
law enforcement at the time did say to us, you
00:12:51.110 --> 00:12:53.889
know, whoever did this definitely had eyes on
00:12:53.889 --> 00:12:57.509
your apartment. And when you and your roommates
00:12:57.509 --> 00:13:01.490
were moving in and out of it, I know that they
00:13:01.490 --> 00:13:03.629
said that the person who committed this crime
00:13:03.629 --> 00:13:06.929
probably knew Shana. But I do think that there's
00:13:06.929 --> 00:13:10.330
a possibility here that it. was an outsider.
00:13:10.610 --> 00:13:12.710
I think it's worth mentioning that that's an
00:13:12.710 --> 00:13:15.789
absolute possibility. Yeah, I mean, just to get
00:13:15.789 --> 00:13:19.110
right into it. Yeah, we police have never named
00:13:19.110 --> 00:13:21.809
a suspect, have never even hinted at who a suspect
00:13:21.809 --> 00:13:24.929
might be. But, you know, they said there was
00:13:24.929 --> 00:13:27.570
no forced entry. So they believed or theorized
00:13:27.570 --> 00:13:31.100
that Shana knew her killer. We, of course, have
00:13:31.100 --> 00:13:33.899
talked before on the podcast that there's a lot
00:13:33.899 --> 00:13:36.179
of ways to get somebody to kind of open a door,
00:13:36.399 --> 00:13:38.840
especially maybe if you live in a small, trusting
00:13:38.840 --> 00:13:42.679
community. Maybe, you know, you could get someone
00:13:42.679 --> 00:13:45.799
to open the door and there's not a obvious sign
00:13:45.799 --> 00:13:50.399
of force in that kind of trickery. But, yeah,
00:13:50.519 --> 00:13:54.490
I think it's possible that... Sheena did know
00:13:54.490 --> 00:13:57.090
her killer. And I think with all the information
00:13:57.090 --> 00:13:59.710
we have, which is very little, I think it's also
00:13:59.710 --> 00:14:03.070
a possibility that someone, you know, like you
00:14:03.070 --> 00:14:05.769
said, just kind of walked in or, you know, was
00:14:05.769 --> 00:14:09.190
a random attacker. You know, Sheena had just
00:14:09.190 --> 00:14:11.950
moved into this apartment where the locks changed
00:14:11.950 --> 00:14:14.789
from the previous tenant or previous multiple
00:14:14.789 --> 00:14:17.769
tenants. You know, when was the locks last changed?
00:14:17.830 --> 00:14:20.590
Who still had keys to that apartment that maybe
00:14:20.590 --> 00:14:23.169
shouldn't have had them? Are there any maintenance
00:14:23.169 --> 00:14:26.049
workers or just people servicing the apartment
00:14:26.049 --> 00:14:29.350
building that maybe would have keys to be able
00:14:29.350 --> 00:14:32.789
to let themselves in? There's a lot of possibilities
00:14:32.789 --> 00:14:36.669
here, and I would be curious what has been ruled
00:14:36.669 --> 00:14:40.950
out officially. Just diving deeper into the timeline,
00:14:41.129 --> 00:14:44.490
I think the circumstances around her death and
00:14:44.490 --> 00:14:50.159
the details within it. do lend itself to the
00:14:50.159 --> 00:14:54.940
perpetrator being someone that she knew. I think
00:14:54.940 --> 00:14:58.820
to put it as delicately as possible, it was shocking
00:14:58.820 --> 00:15:04.279
to hear that she was stabbed 54 times. It's very,
00:15:04.379 --> 00:15:07.500
you're very decisive in those moments. That's
00:15:07.500 --> 00:15:13.120
a long time to just that movement over and over
00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:17.500
again. To me, and... You know, having looked
00:15:17.500 --> 00:15:20.139
at true crime for a very long time along with
00:15:20.139 --> 00:15:26.980
you, it's a crime of passion to me. It very much
00:15:26.980 --> 00:15:31.059
says to me that this was personal. Yeah, I think
00:15:31.059 --> 00:15:36.399
the brutality of it and, you know, choosing to
00:15:36.399 --> 00:15:39.519
stab someone that many times does speak to, like,
00:15:39.580 --> 00:15:42.840
a level of anger that feels personal. That someone
00:15:42.840 --> 00:15:45.220
would have to be, like, really, really angry
00:15:45.220 --> 00:15:50.159
to do that to another person. So, yeah, I do
00:15:50.159 --> 00:15:54.759
think, you know, statistically, it is most likely
00:15:54.759 --> 00:15:58.120
somebody that she knew, all things considered.
00:15:59.179 --> 00:16:02.759
But, yeah, just, you know, things we know from
00:16:02.759 --> 00:16:05.820
true crime, it's, you know, stabbing is a crime
00:16:05.820 --> 00:16:09.139
of passion, just like you said. So I do think
00:16:09.139 --> 00:16:12.220
that lends itself to... Shayna knowing who killed
00:16:12.220 --> 00:16:17.379
her. I do think that the 54 times also lends
00:16:17.379 --> 00:16:21.980
itself to a maybe frenzied state. And for me,
00:16:22.019 --> 00:16:27.120
that's where the toxicology report I'm very interested
00:16:27.120 --> 00:16:35.980
in. Again, the 54 times, if not in an extreme
00:16:35.980 --> 00:16:40.220
headspace of... anger or rage or just in a frenzied
00:16:40.220 --> 00:16:44.259
state, it could be a mind -altered state. I'm
00:16:44.259 --> 00:16:46.399
curious to know if whoever was committing this
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:50.840
crime was using substances that night. And I
00:16:50.840 --> 00:16:54.480
think knowing the toxicology report on her end
00:16:54.480 --> 00:16:58.960
could lead us to questioning more people. I don't
00:16:58.960 --> 00:17:01.360
say us as in we are doing this questioning, but
00:17:01.360 --> 00:17:05.839
in the grand scheme of things, I think the toxicology
00:17:05.839 --> 00:17:11.460
report Could reveal more details. Yeah, and I
00:17:11.460 --> 00:17:13.460
assume police have it. They have those results.
00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:17.500
They never release them, but I know it's a typical
00:17:17.500 --> 00:17:21.299
part of autopsies. So, yeah, just like you said,
00:17:21.359 --> 00:17:23.480
it would just lead to, you know, just a little
00:17:23.480 --> 00:17:25.920
bit more about what happened that night and just
00:17:25.920 --> 00:17:30.440
give a basis to confirm what the friends were
00:17:30.440 --> 00:17:33.380
saying there. Did they say they were doing X,
00:17:33.400 --> 00:17:35.559
Y, and Z? Well, X, Y, and Z showed up here, so
00:17:35.559 --> 00:17:37.980
that supports that. Or did they say, no, we weren't
00:17:37.980 --> 00:17:40.160
doing anything, but X, Y, and Z shows up on the
00:17:40.160 --> 00:17:42.319
report? You know what I mean? Like, it just is
00:17:42.319 --> 00:17:47.380
a fact and, like, a piece of information that
00:17:47.380 --> 00:17:50.119
just helps us solidify, like, facts in the night,
00:17:50.180 --> 00:17:52.440
which, you know, in true crime, to me, it's like
00:17:52.440 --> 00:17:54.440
all facts are friendly, so we should gather as
00:17:54.440 --> 00:17:58.710
much information that we can. Exactly. And I
00:17:58.710 --> 00:18:01.609
think another fact of this case that really stuck
00:18:01.609 --> 00:18:06.109
out to me is that she bled out, which means she
00:18:06.109 --> 00:18:10.970
was left alone and or whoever committed this
00:18:10.970 --> 00:18:16.269
watched that happen, which is very, very frightening
00:18:16.269 --> 00:18:20.650
to me that a person or people were in the room
00:18:20.650 --> 00:18:24.789
while she was dying. And at the end of her life,
00:18:24.849 --> 00:18:29.660
it could have been prevented. That's a big detail
00:18:29.660 --> 00:18:33.759
to me is that either, you know, she was stabbed
00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:37.200
in this frenzied state and the person left or
00:18:37.200 --> 00:18:41.519
they stayed. Either way, it's a horrifying reveal.
00:18:42.519 --> 00:18:45.460
Yeah, like you said, it's one of the few facts
00:18:45.460 --> 00:18:49.119
we do have that she died from blood loss. And
00:18:49.119 --> 00:18:53.900
yeah, it just seems absolutely torturous for
00:18:53.900 --> 00:18:57.950
that to be the cause of death. It really leaves
00:18:57.950 --> 00:19:00.390
me speechless and truly kind of works me up when
00:19:00.390 --> 00:19:02.849
I think about like just the brutality and how
00:19:02.849 --> 00:19:06.089
like murder is always unnecessary. But it's like
00:19:06.089 --> 00:19:08.569
this was completely unnecessary. Like it did
00:19:08.569 --> 00:19:12.769
not need to be so brute. Like why? And, you know,
00:19:12.769 --> 00:19:14.730
just to echo like what her father says, it's
00:19:14.730 --> 00:19:18.089
like he wants to know who killed his daughter
00:19:18.089 --> 00:19:22.400
and why. And, you know, that why. Like really
00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:25.059
gets me in this because it's like, who do you
00:19:25.059 --> 00:19:27.220
think you are to do this to another human and
00:19:27.220 --> 00:19:31.519
then leave? Like, yeah, I just I really get worked
00:19:31.519 --> 00:19:36.720
up about this because it just feels so brutal.
00:19:38.859 --> 00:19:42.200
Yeah, the brutality of this also makes me curious
00:19:42.200 --> 00:19:46.980
of what the weapon was. I'm not sure if you even
00:19:46.980 --> 00:19:49.640
mentioned that or if I if that was something
00:19:49.640 --> 00:19:52.579
that I missed, but. I don't think it's here in
00:19:52.579 --> 00:19:57.619
this case. And I think that really changes the
00:19:57.619 --> 00:20:00.920
motivation around everything. Knowing what that
00:20:00.920 --> 00:20:03.660
weapon was that caused this damage, that ended
00:20:03.660 --> 00:20:09.640
a life, I think could really change the narrative
00:20:09.640 --> 00:20:15.769
of who committed this crime. Yeah, we don't know
00:20:15.769 --> 00:20:18.650
the murder weapon. Police say that they have
00:20:18.650 --> 00:20:21.190
not been able to find it. They've never updated
00:20:21.190 --> 00:20:23.789
if they have found it. But last we knew, they
00:20:23.789 --> 00:20:27.049
were not able to locate it. And no details about,
00:20:27.150 --> 00:20:31.690
you know, what kind of, you know, knife or other
00:20:31.690 --> 00:20:34.509
instrument was used to stab her. And yeah, I
00:20:34.509 --> 00:20:37.130
think that's... That's just another piece of
00:20:37.130 --> 00:20:39.650
evidence. You know, was it a knife from the kitchen?
00:20:39.769 --> 00:20:42.009
You know, something that was there, which would
00:20:42.009 --> 00:20:45.670
lead you to think that, you know, somebody didn't
00:20:45.670 --> 00:20:47.930
come with that. So maybe this was more spur of
00:20:47.930 --> 00:20:51.430
the moment happening. But if it is a knife that
00:20:51.430 --> 00:20:53.410
Shana didn't have and wouldn't have been at her
00:20:53.410 --> 00:20:55.950
apartment, then somebody came with that knife,
00:20:56.009 --> 00:20:58.269
which kind of suggests more pre -planning and
00:20:58.269 --> 00:21:01.700
watching. you know, just almost a different intent.
00:21:01.799 --> 00:21:04.059
So yeah, I agree that having that murder weapon,
00:21:04.140 --> 00:21:06.759
I think, would provide a lot of evidence and
00:21:06.759 --> 00:21:09.420
just kind of knowing just, again, a little bit
00:21:09.420 --> 00:21:12.220
more about what happened that night. And again,
00:21:12.279 --> 00:21:14.500
just on that, like, if I could sit down and,
00:21:14.519 --> 00:21:17.519
like, know anything and just read the case file,
00:21:17.700 --> 00:21:20.539
I'd really want to know what these friends at
00:21:20.539 --> 00:21:23.259
this party said happened. And, you know, did
00:21:23.259 --> 00:21:25.759
her roommate leave that night and sleep somewhere
00:21:25.759 --> 00:21:28.660
else? Was her roommate... there when this happened
00:21:28.660 --> 00:21:31.319
and just didn't wake like what happened and what
00:21:31.319 --> 00:21:35.299
did they say happened because it seems like they
00:21:35.299 --> 00:21:38.099
are all the last people to see shana alive besides
00:21:38.099 --> 00:21:42.119
the killer so minute for minute what happened
00:21:42.119 --> 00:21:45.039
that night and then once you left shana where
00:21:45.039 --> 00:21:47.279
were you minute for minute you know like i'm
00:21:47.279 --> 00:21:51.319
very curious about all of that i'm glad you went
00:21:51.319 --> 00:21:53.539
back to that because it brought me to the beginning
00:21:53.539 --> 00:21:56.700
of the timeline which is the the boyfriend, the
00:21:56.700 --> 00:21:59.819
roommate, the friend, the neighbor? Were they
00:21:59.819 --> 00:22:03.000
included in the 300 interviews? Were they investigated?
00:22:03.180 --> 00:22:08.220
Was anyone in that group a suspect? And I know
00:22:08.220 --> 00:22:11.319
you may not be able to answer those questions,
00:22:11.359 --> 00:22:15.200
but I circled right to that, to the people that
00:22:15.200 --> 00:22:19.029
were around her most immediately. Yeah, we don't
00:22:19.029 --> 00:22:21.910
really know anything. Police have been very tight
00:22:21.910 --> 00:22:24.509
lipped about those friends, what they've said.
00:22:24.730 --> 00:22:28.190
They've never publicly said anything about what
00:22:28.190 --> 00:22:30.730
happened that night beyond, you know, there were
00:22:30.730 --> 00:22:33.190
Shana and three other people there and they were
00:22:33.190 --> 00:22:37.150
playing cards. Her boyfriend's like his identity,
00:22:37.289 --> 00:22:39.410
like this new boyfriend that her family kind
00:22:39.410 --> 00:22:42.089
of talked about. His identity never really comes
00:22:42.089 --> 00:22:46.130
forward. It's unclear if he's one of the boys
00:22:46.130 --> 00:22:49.180
that were. was there um i believe one of them
00:22:49.180 --> 00:22:52.680
was tanya her roommate's boyfriend but yeah just
00:22:52.680 --> 00:22:55.799
what happened what did they say happened and
00:22:55.799 --> 00:22:59.559
it's interesting that like throughout the reporting
00:22:59.559 --> 00:23:02.500
of the story typically like you hear from other
00:23:02.500 --> 00:23:04.339
friends and we heard a lot from sheena's family
00:23:04.339 --> 00:23:06.799
in the reporting but you never heard from the
00:23:06.799 --> 00:23:08.559
roommate which i always thought was a little
00:23:08.559 --> 00:23:10.920
interesting that that roommate obviously would
00:23:10.920 --> 00:23:13.410
be very traumatized so Maybe there's good reason
00:23:13.410 --> 00:23:15.289
she wasn't talking if she is truly innocent.
00:23:15.829 --> 00:23:18.509
But yeah, just a really interesting question
00:23:18.509 --> 00:23:22.589
to know what happened to or what happened with
00:23:22.589 --> 00:23:26.450
all of them and what their story is. You know,
00:23:26.470 --> 00:23:29.869
I do hope in this case that with all the evidence,
00:23:29.950 --> 00:23:32.210
we know police collected a lot of evidence, nearly
00:23:32.210 --> 00:23:35.930
200 pieces. So I would be curious to know what
00:23:35.930 --> 00:23:37.990
evidence they have, if they were ever able to
00:23:37.990 --> 00:23:42.289
get a DNA profile of the killer or. suspected
00:23:42.289 --> 00:23:45.569
killer. And, you know, if they weren't able to
00:23:45.569 --> 00:23:48.809
test it or get that DNA back in 1995, is there
00:23:48.809 --> 00:23:51.869
anything left that we could retest today to maybe
00:23:51.869 --> 00:23:54.690
get an updated profile to put into databases
00:23:54.690 --> 00:23:57.210
to see if there's a hit? Because with a crime
00:23:57.210 --> 00:24:00.549
of this violence, statistically, it seems likely
00:24:00.549 --> 00:24:02.849
that they committed another violent crime that
00:24:02.849 --> 00:24:05.990
would put them in a database. So where is all
00:24:05.990 --> 00:24:08.230
the evidence in this and what is the status of
00:24:08.230 --> 00:24:11.299
it? I hope that this case can be solved because
00:24:11.299 --> 00:24:14.799
there was so much evidence that they're able
00:24:14.799 --> 00:24:18.500
to bring justice and answer and have somebody
00:24:18.500 --> 00:24:22.900
have to answer for all of this. I think our listeners
00:24:22.900 --> 00:24:25.119
will agree that there's a sense of immediacy
00:24:25.119 --> 00:24:28.000
around this case because of how violent her death
00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:32.500
was. So I think that with new ears listening,
00:24:32.640 --> 00:24:38.140
new eyes on Shana's name is only a positive thing.
00:24:39.180 --> 00:24:41.859
So again, if you know anything about the murder
00:24:41.859 --> 00:24:46.259
of Shana Jaros in November of 1995, please call
00:24:46.259 --> 00:24:49.140
the Illinois State Police Zone 6 Investigations
00:24:49.140 --> 00:24:54.759
at 618 -346 -3990 or you can call Crime Stoppers
00:24:54.759 --> 00:25:01.680
at 1 -800 -352 -0136. If you're not already,
00:25:01.940 --> 00:25:05.460
please follow us at our Instagram at coldandmissing.
00:25:05.460 --> 00:25:07.119
You should be able to type in our name and we'll
00:25:07.119 --> 00:25:09.940
pop right up. We will be posting pictures of
00:25:09.940 --> 00:25:11.940
Shana on there. So please share them, especially
00:25:11.940 --> 00:25:13.880
if you've never heard this case before. I think
00:25:13.880 --> 00:25:16.019
the more people we get listening to this case
00:25:16.019 --> 00:25:18.299
and just get her name out there, only good can
00:25:18.299 --> 00:25:21.519
come from that. Getting urgency behind her case
00:25:21.519 --> 00:25:24.759
is needed right now to just keep that momentum
00:25:24.759 --> 00:25:28.670
alive. If you or someone you love is hard of
00:25:28.670 --> 00:25:30.869
hearing, we have transcripts on our website,
00:25:31.029 --> 00:25:34.769
www .coldandmissing .com. We also have all our
00:25:34.769 --> 00:25:36.990
old episodes on there and lots of ways for you
00:25:36.990 --> 00:25:39.109
to contact us. So if you want to reach out, please
00:25:39.109 --> 00:25:42.460
go to our website. And if you could leave us
00:25:42.460 --> 00:25:44.680
a review in your podcast player, we would appreciate
00:25:44.680 --> 00:25:47.059
it so much, especially, like I said, if you've
00:25:47.059 --> 00:25:49.759
never heard of this case before, five stars goes
00:25:49.759 --> 00:25:52.700
a long way in getting this case into the hands
00:25:52.700 --> 00:25:54.880
and ears of other people. And you never know
00:25:54.880 --> 00:25:57.460
who might listen to something and just know something,
00:25:57.519 --> 00:26:00.839
heard something, saw something. So please, five
00:26:00.839 --> 00:26:03.039
stars in your podcast player, thumbs up, whatever
00:26:03.039 --> 00:26:05.819
that metric is, goes a long way. And it's a free
00:26:05.819 --> 00:26:08.859
way to support this podcast. Thank you so much
00:26:08.859 --> 00:26:11.079
for listening to Cold and Missing. I'm your host,
00:26:11.140 --> 00:26:14.039
Allie. And I'm your co -host, Eli. Have a good
00:26:14.039 --> 00:26:16.619
week and stay safe, y 'all. Stay safe, y 'all.
