Cold and Missing

Najah, a devoted mother and foster parent, goes missing on her way to work at Panera Bread. Her car is abandoned in a parking lot about 5 minutes after she was due to start her shift. Shortly after that road crews contact police to say they found some of her belonging along a local highway. About a month after her disapperance a grizzly discovery is made about 2 hours away from where Najah was last seen. Fisherman find a severed foot in their lines. Police will confirm that the foot is Najah’s and that it was severed after her death. Despite extensive searches by multiple police agencies no other remains or clues are found in Najah’s 2019 disappearance and subsequent murder. Five years later, the case remains unsolved, leaving Najah's family and community still seeking answers.

I'm your host, Ali McLaughlin-Sulkowski.

And I'm your co-host, Eli Sulkowski.

7
00:00:29,680 --> 00:00:34,160
And this is Cold and Missing, where we cover cold cases and missing person cases.

8
00:00:34,160 --> 00:00:37,120
Hello everyone and welcome back to Cold and Missing.

9
00:00:37,120 --> 00:00:38,200
I'm Ali.

10
00:00:38,200 --> 00:00:39,540
And I am Eli.

11
00:00:39,540 --> 00:00:40,800
This is episode 82.

12
00:00:40,800 --> 00:00:44,960
I know we were just talking the other night while you were doing research, but closing

13
00:00:44,960 --> 00:00:50,160
in on it being, you know, a hundred episodes is kind of wild to think about.

14
00:00:50,160 --> 00:00:55,960
I remember the early days of you talking very nervously about this being an idea.

15
00:00:55,960 --> 00:01:00,920
And to what it is now, I'm just marvel at you, honey.

16
00:01:00,920 --> 00:01:02,400
Thanks, baby.

17
00:01:02,400 --> 00:01:06,120
So to move into it, this week is a cold case.

18
00:01:06,120 --> 00:01:08,360
Do you want to just get into it?

19
00:01:08,360 --> 00:01:10,080
Yeah, let's do it.

20
00:01:10,080 --> 00:01:13,280
So today we are going to be talking about a cold case.

21
00:01:13,280 --> 00:01:17,740
And today we are going to be talking about the cold case of Najah Farrell.

22
00:01:17,740 --> 00:01:22,120
And this takes place in Avon, Indiana in March of 2019.

23
00:01:22,120 --> 00:01:25,480
But first, a little bit about Najah.

24
00:01:25,480 --> 00:01:29,200
Najah's family describe her as the anchor of the family.

25
00:01:29,200 --> 00:01:33,440
She had been with her partner for several years and the two of them had even been engaged

26
00:01:33,440 --> 00:01:34,560
for a time.

27
00:01:34,560 --> 00:01:39,020
But Najah called the engagement off about three months before her murder.

28
00:01:39,020 --> 00:01:42,480
She was a dedicated and devoted mother to her two children.

29
00:01:42,480 --> 00:01:47,160
Her nieces and nephews also got to enjoy her to the point that if you saw Najah, you would

30
00:01:47,160 --> 00:01:49,880
probably see a gaggle of kids around her too.

31
00:01:49,880 --> 00:01:52,380
She never went anywhere without some in tow.

32
00:01:52,380 --> 00:01:57,260
No one was surprised at all when Najah decided to become a foster parent and took in an additional

33
00:01:57,260 --> 00:02:00,540
three children in her home and life.

34
00:02:00,540 --> 00:02:05,340
She told family and friends that she wanted to quote, give back, end quote, and be there

35
00:02:05,340 --> 00:02:07,760
for kids who didn't have anyone else.

36
00:02:07,760 --> 00:02:11,800
Najah had been a stay at home mom all while her children were young.

37
00:02:11,800 --> 00:02:16,760
But now that they were older and in school, she wanted to pick up a part time job.

38
00:02:16,760 --> 00:02:20,560
She looked for something that could fit with her kids schedule so she could still be there

39
00:02:20,560 --> 00:02:24,000
for them when they got home from school and in the evening.

40
00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:29,500
After searching, she quickly got hired at a Panera Bread in Indianapolis.

41
00:02:29,500 --> 00:02:32,280
And now a timeline of events.

42
00:02:32,280 --> 00:02:38,780
So on Thursday, March 14th, 2019, Najah talks to her mother before bed.

43
00:02:38,780 --> 00:02:40,360
Everything seems normal.

44
00:02:40,360 --> 00:02:43,920
Najah says good night to her mother and says that she's going to get the kids ready for

45
00:02:43,920 --> 00:02:49,500
bed and then get herself ready for bed since she had to be at work at 5am the next morning.

46
00:02:49,500 --> 00:02:55,080
On Friday, March 15th, that next day, Najah was due for her third day of orientation at

47
00:02:55,080 --> 00:02:56,280
Panera Bread.

48
00:02:56,280 --> 00:02:59,940
Her alarm is set for 3am to get ready for work.

49
00:02:59,940 --> 00:03:05,820
Like I mentioned, her start time was at 5am and her home in Avon, Indiana was about, at

50
00:03:05,820 --> 00:03:10,560
most and in the worst traffic conditions, would be a half hour away.

51
00:03:10,560 --> 00:03:14,040
Najah never arrives that morning for her shift at Panera.

52
00:03:14,040 --> 00:03:16,780
But no one raises any flags at her job.

53
00:03:16,780 --> 00:03:21,240
She hadn't worked there long enough for them to know if this was typical of her character

54
00:03:21,240 --> 00:03:22,240
or not.

55
00:03:22,240 --> 00:03:26,320
But to those who knew Najah, they knew that she wouldn't just blow off work.

56
00:03:26,320 --> 00:03:30,480
When Najah failed to pick up her three foster kids from school that evening, that's when

57
00:03:30,480 --> 00:03:34,840
everyone noticed her missing and immediately started to panic about her.

58
00:03:34,840 --> 00:03:41,200
The new routine, since she had started working, was that after work and after school, Najah's

59
00:03:41,200 --> 00:03:46,560
children would take the bus home and let themselves inside, which would give Najah enough time

60
00:03:46,560 --> 00:03:51,280
to drive to the school where her foster children attended to pick them up.

61
00:03:51,280 --> 00:03:55,520
Najah would never be late or miss picking up any of her children.

62
00:03:55,520 --> 00:04:02,000
Her mother Paula says, quote, I knew something was wrong because it was not Najah, end quote.

63
00:04:02,000 --> 00:04:05,000
Najah had always been dependable and reliable.

64
00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:09,480
The school reaches out to Najah's mother, Paula, who immediately starts trying to contact

65
00:04:09,480 --> 00:04:10,480
her daughter.

66
00:04:10,480 --> 00:04:13,780
In fact, all of Najah's family tried to get a hold of her.

67
00:04:13,780 --> 00:04:17,640
Her sister thinks she called her phone at least 100 times trying to get her to pick

68
00:04:17,640 --> 00:04:21,400
up, but Najah never answers or calls back.

69
00:04:21,400 --> 00:04:25,140
That's when the family get in contact with Panera Bread and discover that Najah never

70
00:04:25,140 --> 00:04:27,400
arrived at work that morning.

71
00:04:27,400 --> 00:04:28,660
Everyone is panicked.

72
00:04:28,660 --> 00:04:32,820
The family decides to call the Indianapolis police to report her missing.

73
00:04:32,820 --> 00:04:38,280
The Indy police begin investigating immediately and almost as quickly, they stop.

74
00:04:38,280 --> 00:04:42,860
The Indy police are able to determine that the last place that Najah was seen was at

75
00:04:42,860 --> 00:04:46,580
her home in Avon during the early morning hours.

76
00:04:46,580 --> 00:04:50,720
Since Avon was in a different county, the Indy police transfer the case to the Avon

77
00:04:50,720 --> 00:04:52,240
police department.

78
00:04:52,240 --> 00:04:56,640
Since Avon had a smaller police department, the case wasn't assigned a detective until

79
00:04:56,640 --> 00:05:00,360
Monday morning as the case came in late Friday night.

80
00:05:00,360 --> 00:05:05,440
Over the weekend, Najah's family and friends waste no time looking for the missing mother.

81
00:05:05,440 --> 00:05:09,960
When family look through the home, they notice some strange items were left behind that Najah

82
00:05:09,960 --> 00:05:12,460
would have likely taken with her to work.

83
00:05:12,460 --> 00:05:16,940
Her usual work shoes were left at the home, and the coat that she wore around this time

84
00:05:16,940 --> 00:05:19,660
of year was also left behind.

85
00:05:19,660 --> 00:05:24,640
On Monday, March 18th, a detective is finally assigned to the case and an official search

86
00:05:24,640 --> 00:05:25,640
is started.

87
00:05:25,640 --> 00:05:28,440
It's been two days since Najah vanished.

88
00:05:28,440 --> 00:05:32,400
Police put alerts on all of her bank cards so if they're used, they'll know within

89
00:05:32,400 --> 00:05:33,400
minutes.

90
00:05:33,400 --> 00:05:38,700
However, they'll never get any alerts as her bank cards are never used once she disappears.

91
00:05:38,700 --> 00:05:42,100
Police begin canvassing the neighborhood where Najah lived.

92
00:05:42,100 --> 00:05:47,360
Earlier that week on March 21st, it's been about five days now that Najah's been missing,

93
00:05:47,360 --> 00:05:51,560
police are able to obtain video surveillance footage from the apartment complex where Najah

94
00:05:51,560 --> 00:05:52,560
lived.

95
00:05:52,560 --> 00:05:59,220
Najah's car is seen leaving the complex at 3 15 a.m., the Friday that she went missing.

96
00:05:59,220 --> 00:06:05,560
The car isn't driving erratically or fast, but the timing of it is strange.

97
00:06:05,560 --> 00:06:11,080
Her shift doesn't start until 5 a.m. and the Panera Bread is, as I mentioned, at worse,

98
00:06:11,080 --> 00:06:12,680
only a half hour away.

99
00:06:12,680 --> 00:06:17,760
But at this hour in the morning, it would have likely taken only 15 to 20 minutes to

100
00:06:17,760 --> 00:06:19,300
get there.

101
00:06:19,300 --> 00:06:24,800
Police are very interested to talk to Najah's longtime partner and recent ex-fiance.

102
00:06:24,800 --> 00:06:28,500
They do believe that he was the last person to see her alive.

103
00:06:28,500 --> 00:06:32,820
Police interview him multiple times over the course of the next few weeks again and again

104
00:06:32,820 --> 00:06:35,340
and they eventually rule him out.

105
00:06:35,340 --> 00:06:41,380
About a week after she went missing on March 26th, 2019, Najah's black Nissan Altima

106
00:06:41,380 --> 00:06:47,600
was found abandoned by police in the parking lot of a movie theater and grill in Indianapolis.

107
00:06:47,600 --> 00:06:52,000
The parking lot where the car was found was only about two and a half miles from the Panera

108
00:06:52,000 --> 00:06:53,740
Bread where she was working.

109
00:06:53,740 --> 00:06:58,720
The family is hopeful that her car will yield some clues as to her whereabouts, but a forensic

110
00:06:58,720 --> 00:07:03,320
review of the car will later reveal that there was nothing out of the ordinary.

111
00:07:03,320 --> 00:07:08,420
Police are able to obtain grainy footage from the parking lot surveillance cameras.

112
00:07:08,420 --> 00:07:14,180
They see Najah's car being driven in around 5.05 a.m. on the day she disappeared, just

113
00:07:14,180 --> 00:07:18,340
five minutes after her shift should have started two and a half miles away.

114
00:07:18,340 --> 00:07:23,580
The driver exits the vehicle, he appears to be male, and is picked up by another car and

115
00:07:23,580 --> 00:07:25,100
driven out of the parking lot.

116
00:07:25,100 --> 00:07:30,020
However, the footage is too grainy to make out details of the two people or the license

117
00:07:30,020 --> 00:07:32,960
plate of the vehicle that picked up the driver.

118
00:07:32,960 --> 00:07:39,700
Later that day on March 26th or around this time, a road construction crew found some

119
00:07:39,700 --> 00:07:43,220
of Najah's personal items discarded on the side of the road.

120
00:07:43,220 --> 00:07:48,180
Police will never officially say what these items are, but they will say that her purse

121
00:07:48,180 --> 00:07:50,980
and cell phone are still missing.

122
00:07:50,980 --> 00:07:55,260
On March 28th, Najah has been missing for almost two weeks.

123
00:07:55,260 --> 00:07:59,680
The Avon Police hold a press conference that's broadcast on Facebook Live.

124
00:07:59,680 --> 00:08:03,980
The police say in the conference, quote, as a department, our investigators have been

125
00:08:03,980 --> 00:08:07,140
working around the clock since this has taken place.

126
00:08:07,140 --> 00:08:11,640
To date, we've served more than 30 search warrants, end quote.

127
00:08:11,640 --> 00:08:15,380
The search warrants included details from Najah's phone and bank.

128
00:08:15,380 --> 00:08:20,280
Police say also at this point that they have conducted a total of 40 interviews looking

129
00:08:20,280 --> 00:08:22,120
for the missing mother.

130
00:08:22,120 --> 00:08:27,280
Police are trying to use every available resource, including the Indiana aviation team and sent

131
00:08:27,280 --> 00:08:29,780
dogs to try to track her scent.

132
00:08:29,780 --> 00:08:36,140
On April 8th, just shy of a month that Najah has been missing, in Crown Point, Indiana,

133
00:08:36,140 --> 00:08:41,160
which is about two hours away from Avon, two fishermen are casting lines in a retention

134
00:08:41,160 --> 00:08:43,300
pond near I-65.

135
00:08:43,300 --> 00:08:46,900
In their fishing lines, a human severed foot was found.

136
00:08:46,900 --> 00:08:51,620
The two men call police who begin trying to ID who this person is.

137
00:08:51,620 --> 00:08:53,980
They do have one big clue, however.

138
00:08:53,980 --> 00:08:56,940
On the foot is a tattoo of the name Najah.

139
00:08:56,940 --> 00:09:01,060
After looking through missing persons report for the state of Indiana, police in Crown

140
00:09:01,060 --> 00:09:05,820
Point contact the Avon police to let them know that they think they have a match.

141
00:09:05,820 --> 00:09:11,580
Tentatively, police do ID the foot as belonging to Najah, but DNA tests will have to be run

142
00:09:11,580 --> 00:09:13,660
in order to confirm this.

143
00:09:13,660 --> 00:09:17,940
Over the next several days, police will search the pond and surrounding area for any other

144
00:09:17,940 --> 00:09:20,340
remains and clues left behind.

145
00:09:20,340 --> 00:09:23,340
But nothing outside of Najah's foot is found.

146
00:09:23,340 --> 00:09:28,740
Police sent divers into the pond and ponds nearby, and sent drones overhead to do aerial

147
00:09:28,740 --> 00:09:30,100
searches.

148
00:09:30,100 --> 00:09:34,380
The coroner remained on the scene over the next few days in case any more remains were

149
00:09:34,380 --> 00:09:35,780
found.

150
00:09:35,780 --> 00:09:42,540
Upon the discovery, Avon's Deputy Chief of Investigation, Bryant Nugent, says, quote,

151
00:09:42,540 --> 00:09:47,800
the family does have ties to the northwest Indiana area, so this area wouldn't be new

152
00:09:47,800 --> 00:09:49,820
to our investigations.

153
00:09:49,820 --> 00:09:53,220
We weren't expecting anything to turn up where it did.

154
00:09:53,220 --> 00:09:54,500
End quote.

155
00:09:54,500 --> 00:09:58,860
On Wednesday, April 10, after two days of searching the area where Najah's foot was

156
00:09:58,860 --> 00:10:02,540
found, police come up empty and recovering the rest of her body.

157
00:10:02,540 --> 00:10:07,620
DNA tests will ultimately confirm that the foot did belong to Najah, and further testing

158
00:10:07,620 --> 00:10:12,420
will tell police that the foot was severed from the body after death.

159
00:10:12,420 --> 00:10:17,140
Avon police announced that their investigation has switched from a missing person case to

160
00:10:17,140 --> 00:10:21,200
a death case, but stopped short of calling it a homicide since they don't know how

161
00:10:21,200 --> 00:10:22,520
Najah died.

162
00:10:22,520 --> 00:10:26,200
But police do believe that foul play is involved.

163
00:10:26,200 --> 00:10:31,140
Police still have no idea why or how Najah's foot ended up in the area.

164
00:10:31,140 --> 00:10:35,540
Police investigate the ties that she has to this part of Indiana, but police say, quote,

165
00:10:35,540 --> 00:10:40,500
we don't have a target, if you will, a location or a house or an individual.

166
00:10:40,500 --> 00:10:44,560
Historically, there's ties there to the family, but nothing specific that we're willing to

167
00:10:44,560 --> 00:10:45,900
talk about.

168
00:10:45,900 --> 00:10:46,900
End quote.

169
00:10:46,900 --> 00:10:52,180
Avon police at this point don't believe that Najah was abducted, nor do police think that

170
00:10:52,180 --> 00:10:54,900
anyone else is at risk in the community.

171
00:10:54,900 --> 00:11:00,300
Quote, we don't know 100%, but in the absence of having that information, I think it'd

172
00:11:00,300 --> 00:11:03,300
be irresponsible to cast that perspective.

173
00:11:03,300 --> 00:11:04,300
End quote.

174
00:11:04,300 --> 00:11:10,040
When asked if police think that further dismemberment is possible, they say, quote, at this point,

175
00:11:10,040 --> 00:11:13,920
we don't have any information to suggest that or to deny that.

176
00:11:13,920 --> 00:11:18,420
When you only find what we found, certainly that becomes a theory.

177
00:11:18,420 --> 00:11:23,520
But in the absence of other information to lead you one way or another, that has to remain

178
00:11:23,520 --> 00:11:27,860
an unknown, just as the cause and manner of death remains undetermined.

179
00:11:27,860 --> 00:11:28,860
End quote.

180
00:11:28,860 --> 00:11:33,780
Since police do believe that Najah was targeted by someone that she knew, they begin to focus

181
00:11:33,780 --> 00:11:38,540
on who she had contact with in the last days and weeks leading up to her disappearance

182
00:11:38,540 --> 00:11:40,220
and murder.

183
00:11:40,220 --> 00:11:44,860
The Avon police department pleads with the public to come forward with information.

184
00:11:44,860 --> 00:11:47,940
Quote, somebody knows something about this case.

185
00:11:47,940 --> 00:11:52,400
We are simply trying to appeal to what we know is the majority of the state, which is

186
00:11:52,400 --> 00:11:55,380
good hearted people who want to do the right thing.

187
00:11:55,380 --> 00:11:56,380
End quote.

188
00:11:56,380 --> 00:12:02,100
The Avon police do say that they're working with other agencies, including the FBI, Brownsburg

189
00:12:02,100 --> 00:12:07,400
police, state conservation officers, and the Indiana State Police, as well as the Crown

190
00:12:07,400 --> 00:12:08,660
Point police.

191
00:12:08,660 --> 00:12:13,120
The Crown Point police will continue to search ponds and wooded areas, hoping that additional

192
00:12:13,120 --> 00:12:17,140
clues would turn up surrounding Najah, but nothing does.

193
00:12:17,140 --> 00:12:22,240
It takes about a month, but at the beginning of May of 2019, DNA results come back that

194
00:12:22,240 --> 00:12:28,060
confirm what police, friends, and family already knew, that the foot did belong to Najah.

195
00:12:28,060 --> 00:12:32,580
Once the searches begin to die down, so does coverage of Najah in the media.

196
00:12:32,580 --> 00:12:37,420
However, the community doesn't forget her, and they often write the local paper to ask

197
00:12:37,420 --> 00:12:38,420
about updates.

198
00:12:38,420 --> 00:12:43,600
Eventually, a Facebook group is created to keep each other updated on any tiny scrap

199
00:12:43,600 --> 00:12:45,460
of information.

200
00:12:45,460 --> 00:12:50,140
Police will continue to search ponds in the Indianapolis area as well, and still they

201
00:12:50,140 --> 00:12:52,220
fail to find anything.

202
00:12:52,220 --> 00:12:58,060
On the one year anniversary of her being missing, and ultimately her death in 2020, police still

203
00:12:58,060 --> 00:13:02,500
have not named a person of interest or a suspect in Najah's murder.

204
00:13:02,500 --> 00:13:08,460
Najah's family has felt every minute of the past year without her and without answers.

205
00:13:08,460 --> 00:13:12,220
Family believe that whoever murdered Najah knew her, since it seems like her schedule

206
00:13:12,220 --> 00:13:14,360
was so intimately known.

207
00:13:14,360 --> 00:13:17,620
Her work schedule, her car, her routine.

208
00:13:17,620 --> 00:13:22,980
In March of 2024, so it's been five years now since Najah's murder, and there are still

209
00:13:22,980 --> 00:13:24,980
no new leads in this case.

210
00:13:24,980 --> 00:13:32,940
However, her mother Paula does say now that Najah's ex-fiance had texted her, Paula,

211
00:13:32,940 --> 00:13:36,780
saying that Najah had texted him the morning that she vanished.

212
00:13:36,780 --> 00:13:40,300
That's about the only new clue that we get in the case though.

213
00:13:40,300 --> 00:13:44,900
The foster children Najah was raising are placed back into the system, and Najah's

214
00:13:44,900 --> 00:13:48,380
mother takes over raising her two young boys.

215
00:13:48,380 --> 00:13:51,140
Her family continues to fight for answers.

216
00:13:51,140 --> 00:13:54,420
For Najah, for themselves, and for her sons.

217
00:13:54,420 --> 00:13:58,620
The Avon Police stay committed to solving the case, but leads have dried up.

218
00:13:58,620 --> 00:14:03,380
But since at least two people were involved that morning, police know that somebody does

219
00:14:03,380 --> 00:14:04,740
know something.

220
00:14:04,740 --> 00:14:09,660
So with that, if you know anything about the disappearance and murder of Najah Farrell in

221
00:14:09,660 --> 00:14:18,340
March of 2019, please call the Avon Police Department at 317-839-8700.

222
00:14:18,340 --> 00:14:24,660
And the sources for the timeline today come from The Times, The Indianapolis Star, WTHR,

223
00:14:24,660 --> 00:14:27,900
and WRTV.

224
00:14:27,900 --> 00:14:31,300
So that is the case of Najah Farrell.

225
00:14:31,300 --> 00:14:39,620
First of all, I think for the most part people who choose to parent in their lives via foster

226
00:14:39,620 --> 00:14:42,820
ring are just angels on earth.

227
00:14:42,820 --> 00:14:48,940
I am not adopted myself, but I just come from a long line of adoption within my family and

228
00:14:48,940 --> 00:14:50,860
I am not a stranger to the system.

229
00:14:50,860 --> 00:14:59,060
So to be someone who advocates for the children in that system and helps get them out and

230
00:14:59,060 --> 00:15:03,460
into loving and caring homes is a really beautiful thing.

231
00:15:03,460 --> 00:15:11,700
And I'm sad that her time here on this earth was cut violently short because it's clear

232
00:15:11,700 --> 00:15:16,340
that she was someone who moved and navigated the world through love and care and was just

233
00:15:16,340 --> 00:15:18,340
like living her life.

234
00:15:18,340 --> 00:15:19,580
I completely agree.

235
00:15:19,580 --> 00:15:27,060
I feel like the state of Indiana and the entire world lost just such a good person with the

236
00:15:27,060 --> 00:15:28,980
murder of Najah.

237
00:15:28,980 --> 00:15:30,900
Completely unfair.

238
00:15:30,900 --> 00:15:33,860
And yeah, what just like an incredible human.

239
00:15:33,860 --> 00:15:41,060
I had to keep reminding myself as I was listening to you that this was 2019 because I just don't

240
00:15:41,060 --> 00:15:42,060
understand.

241
00:15:42,060 --> 00:15:48,100
I mean, one, the crime itself, I don't understand, but I just don't understand how if there's

242
00:15:48,100 --> 00:15:51,980
surveillance and there's a pretty tight timeline.

243
00:15:51,980 --> 00:15:59,980
Granted I have a limited understanding of different jurisdictions with like crimes operating across

244
00:15:59,980 --> 00:16:04,060
county lines, state lines, city lines, you know, all of that.

245
00:16:04,060 --> 00:16:10,780
It just seems really unfortunate that there were eyes on this within a couple of hours

246
00:16:10,780 --> 00:16:11,780
of it happening.

247
00:16:11,780 --> 00:16:17,500
I think there was a police response, but then it, but then there was a stop.

248
00:16:17,500 --> 00:16:20,460
And that to me, it just sucks.

249
00:16:20,460 --> 00:16:22,500
It just sucks when that happens.

250
00:16:22,500 --> 00:16:29,220
Because as we all know, if you engage with true, true crime, the first 48 hours are very

251
00:16:29,220 --> 00:16:34,700
vital to finding someone, not just period, but potentially alive.

252
00:16:34,700 --> 00:16:35,700
Yeah.

253
00:16:35,700 --> 00:16:41,340
The delay in the Avon Police Department getting started on her case is really unfortunate.

254
00:16:41,340 --> 00:16:47,060
And to be fair to the Avon Police, it's something that they acknowledge as well, that they were

255
00:16:47,060 --> 00:16:50,660
already 48 hours behind whenever they started on the case.

256
00:16:50,660 --> 00:16:57,380
You know, who knows how much was lost in them not immediately jumping on it or what could

257
00:16:57,380 --> 00:17:01,180
have been recovered evidence wise or even nausea.

258
00:17:01,180 --> 00:17:08,780
So it's really unfortunate that that gap happened at such a critical time in the timeline because

259
00:17:08,780 --> 00:17:14,580
otherwise the Avon Police response was pretty substantial, I thought.

260
00:17:14,580 --> 00:17:15,580
Yeah.

261
00:17:15,580 --> 00:17:19,980
I mean, I think in layman's terms, they were doing their job.

262
00:17:19,980 --> 00:17:23,620
They were doing what you're supposed to do in a case like this.

263
00:17:23,620 --> 00:17:32,020
I also just want not the focus on really what was found of her, but this particular type

264
00:17:32,020 --> 00:17:41,620
of violence and once again, violence against women is absolutely abhorrent and just horrifying.

265
00:17:41,620 --> 00:17:51,460
I just didn't want to pass over the fact that this was a full human being who was, at least

266
00:17:51,460 --> 00:17:56,340
to me, very likely fucking dismembered.

267
00:17:56,340 --> 00:18:01,700
And that is just particularly awful.

268
00:18:01,700 --> 00:18:07,660
I was just shocked by that fact and I just didn't want to skip over the fact that this

269
00:18:07,660 --> 00:18:16,380
person was taken from her life and then taken apart and we don't know who did it.

270
00:18:16,380 --> 00:18:19,980
You know, that person is still fucking out there.

271
00:18:19,980 --> 00:18:21,620
That terrifies me.

272
00:18:21,620 --> 00:18:26,860
I was kind of surprised to hear that law enforcement said, you know, you don't need to be alarmed.

273
00:18:26,860 --> 00:18:30,780
But we found a body part of a community member.

274
00:18:30,780 --> 00:18:33,820
To me, that's cause to be worried.

275
00:18:33,820 --> 00:18:38,020
To be worried if you're living in a community where a crime like that was just committed.

276
00:18:38,020 --> 00:18:39,020
Totally.

277
00:18:39,020 --> 00:18:46,460
And thank you for just speaking on the brutality of everything in this case.

278
00:18:46,460 --> 00:18:51,220
But I always try to like kind of read in between the lines of what law enforcement is saying.

279
00:18:51,220 --> 00:18:58,540
So whenever I heard that, to me, what I kind of took away from it is that they might have

280
00:18:58,540 --> 00:19:03,620
some piece of information that they haven't made public, but that would suggest that this

281
00:19:03,620 --> 00:19:06,340
was a very targeted attack.

282
00:19:06,340 --> 00:19:12,260
Obviously, having a person like this in the community is always a danger because if they're

283
00:19:12,260 --> 00:19:17,260
willing to murder somebody and be this brutal about it, then who knows what else they are

284
00:19:17,260 --> 00:19:18,260
capable of.

285
00:19:18,260 --> 00:19:20,260
So I completely agree with you there.

286
00:19:20,260 --> 00:19:26,380
But I just kind of took it as the police might have some information that this was very targeted

287
00:19:26,380 --> 00:19:31,380
and not random, that somebody in Najah's life set out to do that this day.

288
00:19:31,380 --> 00:19:35,100
And I think that's where a lot of the questions, for me at least, like that's where a lot of

289
00:19:35,100 --> 00:19:37,440
them come from, is that day she went missing.

290
00:19:37,440 --> 00:19:43,740
Her car is seen leaving around 315, which is way too early to be leaving for work.

291
00:19:43,740 --> 00:19:47,380
So you know, was it her actually driving her car?

292
00:19:47,380 --> 00:19:49,860
We're unable to see that from the surveillance footage.

293
00:19:49,860 --> 00:19:54,700
It's not the car isn't close enough and the camera isn't good enough to capture that kind

294
00:19:54,700 --> 00:19:55,700
of image.

295
00:19:55,700 --> 00:20:02,100
I'm curious as to if it was her leaving because as far as I know, there doesn't seem to have

296
00:20:02,100 --> 00:20:06,780
been any struggle at her home where her children were.

297
00:20:06,780 --> 00:20:14,020
So if there had been some noises, there was a lot of ears that could have heard it potentially.

298
00:20:14,020 --> 00:20:18,700
But as far as we know, nothing happened at the home that at least caused the kids to

299
00:20:18,700 --> 00:20:19,700
wake up.

300
00:20:19,700 --> 00:20:23,540
I thought about that as well, that the kids being there.

301
00:20:23,540 --> 00:20:29,580
But I also thought about the the information about, you know, her work shoes being left

302
00:20:29,580 --> 00:20:30,580
behind.

303
00:20:30,580 --> 00:20:34,740
And again, as you know, too, and anyone listening, like if you are on your feet all day, you

304
00:20:34,740 --> 00:20:38,260
don't leave your house without your work shoes, you know.

305
00:20:38,260 --> 00:20:46,380
So I think what I filled in there is yes, even if kids are in the home, if someone you

306
00:20:46,380 --> 00:20:52,900
know enters your space, like you let them in, but then they order you out and are threatening

307
00:20:52,900 --> 00:20:59,500
you, they can order you out silently with the threat of the children if you aren't quiet.

308
00:20:59,500 --> 00:21:04,180
Yeah, the shoes being left there is very interesting.

309
00:21:04,180 --> 00:21:06,060
And her jacket being left behind.

310
00:21:06,060 --> 00:21:08,340
March is still pretty cold in Indiana.

311
00:21:08,340 --> 00:21:13,220
So you can have like an occasional warm day, but typically it's pretty cold.

312
00:21:13,220 --> 00:21:16,600
So leaving without your jacket, especially that early in the morning before the sun is

313
00:21:16,600 --> 00:21:19,100
up is kind of strange.

314
00:21:19,100 --> 00:21:25,700
But maybe if you're running to a car that is idling, like, I could see that happening

315
00:21:25,700 --> 00:21:26,940
where you would leave it behind.

316
00:21:26,940 --> 00:21:33,380
But the shoes is hard to imagine why, you know, being on your feet all day, why you

317
00:21:33,380 --> 00:21:37,340
would want to leave your work shoes behind, especially working in a restaurant, you usually

318
00:21:37,340 --> 00:21:42,180
have your work shoes because sometimes they get messy and like you need them to be non

319
00:21:42,180 --> 00:21:44,460
slip and you know, there's just all these criteria.

320
00:21:44,460 --> 00:21:48,620
So the shoes being left behind and then you know, kind of the threat of the children like

321
00:21:48,620 --> 00:21:53,780
if you don't go quietly, like I think that is also very true and could have been used

322
00:21:53,780 --> 00:21:55,580
as a tactic.

323
00:21:55,580 --> 00:22:00,020
Her car being dropped off about two and a half miles away from where she worked right

324
00:22:00,020 --> 00:22:03,540
about at the time that she should have started for work.

325
00:22:03,540 --> 00:22:09,420
There's two people involved this we know for sure the person who was driving her car, and

326
00:22:09,420 --> 00:22:14,040
then the person who picked that person up in a different car.

327
00:22:14,040 --> 00:22:15,380
So somebody knows something.

328
00:22:15,380 --> 00:22:18,000
It's not just one person who can take a secret to the grave.

329
00:22:18,000 --> 00:22:20,020
It's got to be at least two people who can do that.

330
00:22:20,020 --> 00:22:22,300
So somebody knows something.

331
00:22:22,300 --> 00:22:23,300
I would be curious.

332
00:22:23,300 --> 00:22:28,740
I know the forensic analysis of the car didn't show any additional or shed any additional

333
00:22:28,740 --> 00:22:30,580
light on what happened to nausea.

334
00:22:30,580 --> 00:22:33,380
But I just would be curious.

335
00:22:33,380 --> 00:22:37,940
Was the seat moved back from the position she would normally have it was anything adjusted

336
00:22:37,940 --> 00:22:43,300
that you know the mirrors, the steering wheel, anything adjusted outside of how she would

337
00:22:43,300 --> 00:22:48,900
normally have it that could give a clue to at least some of the physical descriptions

338
00:22:48,900 --> 00:22:53,240
of this person, taller, shorter, you know, that kind of thing.

339
00:22:53,240 --> 00:22:54,740
I wonder about that.

340
00:22:54,740 --> 00:23:04,100
Yeah, I also wonder, especially in this case, just to the depths of my soul, like what was

341
00:23:04,100 --> 00:23:10,180
the motive here that I can't, I can't come up with at all.

342
00:23:10,180 --> 00:23:13,740
I just I don't understand.

343
00:23:13,740 --> 00:23:21,140
And in relation to the particular violence surrounding this is like what what was happening

344
00:23:21,140 --> 00:23:22,140
there.

345
00:23:22,140 --> 00:23:27,980
I hope that with law enforcement, like you said, you know, with you reading in between

346
00:23:27,980 --> 00:23:36,100
the lines, I hope that holding information close to their chest is because they maybe

347
00:23:36,100 --> 00:23:41,000
have a maybe they're slowly building a case and it's a case that they'll be able to,

348
00:23:41,000 --> 00:23:42,700
you know, prosecute someone on.

349
00:23:42,700 --> 00:23:48,260
Yeah, I think the hope is always that police have a lot more than what they're letting

350
00:23:48,260 --> 00:23:52,540
us know about and that they are building that case behind the scenes.

351
00:23:52,540 --> 00:23:59,300
I really hope that Najah's family and her sons get the answers that they're looking

352
00:23:59,300 --> 00:24:00,980
for.

353
00:24:00,980 --> 00:24:06,260
And from the interviews I was listening to with the family, it seems very important to

354
00:24:06,260 --> 00:24:10,220
them that they're able to bring the rest of Najah home.

355
00:24:10,220 --> 00:24:14,500
So I hope that the family is able to get that down the line as well, that they're able to

356
00:24:14,500 --> 00:24:20,060
bring her home and put her to rest, because like you said, this case is from 2019.

357
00:24:20,060 --> 00:24:22,340
There's like a lot of stuff already here.

358
00:24:22,340 --> 00:24:27,060
Surveillance footage, her stuff is found on the side of the road and then these northwest

359
00:24:27,060 --> 00:24:28,980
Indiana, her foot being found.

360
00:24:28,980 --> 00:24:31,480
Like, there's a lot of stuff happening in this case.

361
00:24:31,480 --> 00:24:35,860
So hopefully there's a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes that is getting Najah's

362
00:24:35,860 --> 00:24:41,420
family closer to those answers that they're looking for and wanting.

363
00:24:41,420 --> 00:24:48,860
Before we, you know, kind of wrap things up here, I and Ali as well extend our deepest

364
00:24:48,860 --> 00:24:52,340
condolences to Najah's family.

365
00:24:52,340 --> 00:24:59,460
It is unimaginable to receive that information that a part of your loved one is discovered

366
00:24:59,460 --> 00:25:05,140
in that way and I'm so sorry to her children who have to live with that information.

367
00:25:05,140 --> 00:25:11,380
Again, if you know anything about the disappearance and murder of Najah Farrell in March of 2019,

368
00:25:11,380 --> 00:25:20,220
please call the Avon Police Department at 317-839-8700.

369
00:25:20,220 --> 00:25:24,700
We will of course be posting photos of Najah on our Instagram if you don't follow us there

370
00:25:24,700 --> 00:25:28,500
yet at Cold and Missing will pop right up and it's a great way to just keep up with
